JOIN THE RACE FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE SUBMISSIONS
PRESS RELEASE – August 17, 2009
In a final push for submissions to the Same-Sex Marriage Inquiry closing later this month organisers of Sydney’s National Day of Action For Same-Sex Marriage, Community Action Against Homophobia, are holding a Same-Sex Marriage Race this Saturday the 22nd of August.
Emilia Lawonski CAAH co-convenor said; “The Marriage race is a friendly competition in which participants are invited to approach as many members of the public as possible and invite them to fill out a submission to the same-sex marriage inquiry on the spot.”
Entrants will be able to pick up submission forms from CAAH volunteers in Newtown under the “I have a dream mural” from 11am till 5pm. As an extra incentive participants will receive free drinks vouchers for their efforts at the finishing line at The Oxford Hotel on Oxford St. There will also be special prizes for the winners of the race provided by the Oxford Hotel for the individual or team who brings in the most submissions on the day!
Emilia Further stated “We’re excited to have the unholy duo Norrie mAy-Welby and Sam Choy as Cardinal Point and Sister Carmin Cider who performed at this years National Day of Action, teaming up for the marriage race – make sure to look out for them, they can’t be missed!”
Peter Furness from Australian Marriage Equality has encouraged friendly competition between CAAH and AME:
"AME would enjoy seeing CAAH attempt to outdo us in gaining submissions to the Senate Inquiry into marriage equality."
"If friendly competition between us can lead to a greater number of submissions being made, then we are all for it."
"Of course, if you are not approached by a CAAH volunteer, you can still go to our website and make an online submission at www.australianmarriageequality.com. Be sure to do so before submissions close on 28 August."
Emilia Lawonski stated: “We need the support of the entire community in order to remove the inequality and homophobia that is enshrined so strongly in Australian law. Currently the law says to us that same-sex couples and their children are unworthy of equal protection under the law, and that urgently needs to change”
“We encourage everyone to participate, even if it means stepping out of a comfort zone! Everyone is invited to join in the race and can register as an individual, couple or even a team”
Participants can register for the race online at www.caah.org.au/nda or e-mail caahsydney@gmail.com for more information

Pressure on for Labor to support same sex marriage
NEWS RELEASE – July 27, 2009
National Rainbow Labor has welcomed a decision by the Tasmanian ALP State Conference on the weekend to support same sex marriage.
Spokesperson Matthew Loader said the decision was timely and showed there were many in the rank-and-file of the Labor party who support changing the current policy.
“The strong support for same sex marriage at the Tasmanian State Conference sends an important message to the National ALP Conference,” Mr Loader said.
“This is an issue the Labor party can no longer avoid – and the Tasmanian ALP should be congratulated for opening the debate.”
“With the backing of his party, Premier Bartlett can make sure this issue is heard loudly and clearly at the national conference.”
“Fairness is a bread-and-butter issue for the Labor party. But you can’t pick and choose when to be fair, when to give people equal treatment and when not to.”
“Polls show there is widespread support in the community for same sex marriage.”
“But federal Labor’s policy is behind the times. Now is the time to change that.”
Rainbow Labor will be pushing amendments to Labor’s policy platform at the conference to allow for same sex marriage in Australia, as well as a range of other anti-discrimination measures.
“This strong sign of support sets the stage for an exciting debate on the conference floor,” Mr Loader said.
“This is not a fringe issue. It goes to the heart of Labor’s values as political party.”

US presidential candidate adds voice to Australia's same-sex marriage campaign
MEDIA RELEASE - July 27, 2009
MELBOURNE — US Congressman Dennis Kucinich, a high-profile Democratic candidate for President in 2004 and 2008, has provided the Equal Love campaign with a video message offering encouragement to Australians involved in the fight for same-sex marriage.
"It's time for us to declare universally that people should not be discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation," he says in the recording. "For same-sex couples, there should be a right to marry. Full equality means marriage equality."
"In Australia, as you gather, just know that there are people all over the world who are aware of the importance of your efforts."
"People who are deeply in love with one another should not have barriers put between themselves and their loved one by the state. The state has no right to do that."
"The right of people to be able to marry who they want is something that ought to be fundamental in a democratic society."
The US congressman's message of support comes just five days before the largest ever public rallies for same-sex marriage are due to take place throughout Australia. August 1st has been declared the National Day of Action for Same-Sex Marriage and thousands are expected to protest across the country.
“We are absolutely delighted to receive a message of support from such a high-profile US politician as Dennis Kucinich,” said Tony Pitman, a spokesperson for Equal Love. “His comments along with messages from scores of other international groups show that Australia's fight for marriage equality has reached a tipping point and is now attracting the attention of the rest of the world. Marriage equality is a simple civil rights issue that is quickly spreading throughout the world's liberal democracies. It's shameful that the Australian government is dragging its feet on this, but I think that with increasing domestic and international pressure, Australian politicians will eventually realise that, as the congressman says, 'full equality means marriage equality'. ”

Fifth and final marriage equality ad launched today – “It's not too much to ask”
EQUAL LOVE - MEDIA RELEASE - 24 July 2009
MELBOURNE — With just eight days to go before nationwide rallies for same-sex marriage, Equal Love today launched its fifth and final online advertisement designed to deliver the serious message that the fight for same-sex marriage is not an academic issue; it affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of real people.
The ad comes as the last in a series of five, all designed to inform and educate the Australian public and politicians about the importance of equal rights for same-sex couples.
The aim of today's ad specifically is to remind people that the issue of same-sex marriage is not just an abstract debate about rights. The exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage affects real people and causes genuine injustice and suffering.
The five ads produced by Equal Love all feature two main characters, the Australian Government and Equality. Today’s ad also features two couples in love; one opposite-sex couple and one same-sex couple (two women). Both couples met and fell in love under almost identical circumstances. The love they feel for each other is the same. The opposite-sex couple is now planning their wedding. The same-sex couple is not allowed to get married.
"In our previous ads, we tried to use humor to get the message across," said Meighen Katz, Equal Love spokesperson and producer of the online ads. "But for our final ad, we decided to get serious, because at heart this is a serious issue. It's about the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across Australia and how they're affected by being denied basic human rights that the rest of society takes for granted."
Meighen Katz, spokesperson for Equal Love: "Marriage equality is not 'the icing on the cake' or an 'unnecessary luxury' as some have claimed. It's about treating LGBT people as full human beings with the same rights as everyone else. Marriage is the highest form of relationship recognition that we have as a society.
The fact that same-sex couples are excluded from marriage sends out a very strong signal to society at large that LGBT people are not fully human and are not worthy of the same rights as everyone else. This stigmatizes same-sex relationships and that in turn fuels other forms of discrimination and human rights abuses, including violence and even murder. It also leads to self-acceptance problems among LGBT people, which can lead to low self-esteem, depression and even suicide.
That's why the fight for marriage equality is so serious. It's a vital part of the fight against homophobia in general. You could say it's a
necessary, but not sufficient condition for a achieving a more tolerant and accepting society."

Victorians unite to fight for same-sex marriage
Amnesty International Australia, Victorian Branch
Event Advisory - Press Release - 24 July 2009
Victorian supporters of Amnesty International will unite with people around the country participating in the National Day of Action for Same-Sex Marriage on Saturday 1 August.
The human rights advocates will join forces with Equal Love and the nationwide campaign for same-sex marriage in Australia, to call for the Australian Government to remove all discrimination from the Marriage Act (1961) on the basis of sexuality and gender identity and to permit marriage regardless of sex, sexuality and gender identity.
In Melbourne, supporters will join a rally at 1pm in Federation Square on 1 August, then march up Swanston Street to the marriage registry office. There, a number of couples will stage a symbolic wedding ceremony to highlight the inequalities in Australian civil marriage law.
"It is a basic human right to be free from discrimination on the grounds of one’s sexual orientation. Adults consensually entering into a marriage deserve equal civil recognition of their relationship, whatever their sexual orientation. Denying this not only stigmatises those relationships and fuels discrimination, but
also leads to other rights violations.

Gay activist Veterans Join August 1st Action
PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 20, 2009
Veteran gay rights campaigners and 78'ers Mannie De Saxe and Kendall Lovett will join the Sydney demonstration on August 1st.
De Saxe and Lovett, who also founded the SPAIDS planting at the Sydney AIDS Memorial Grove and Gay and Lesbian Solidarity, have come to Sydney to send a clear message to the Rudd Labor government.
De Saxe stated: ‘Our main reason for wanting to have same-sex marriages legalised is because partial equality is not equality, and until we get same-sex marriage legalised we will still be discriminated against. We are participating because we want to show what a mockery this government's same-sex legislation is and how it perpetuates sexual apartheid in Australia.’
De Saxe 80 and Kendall 84, who will be handing out flyers in protest on the day stated: ‘It should be remembered that this government has refused to give us a grandfather clause with the introduction of de-facto legislation, starting on 1 July 2009 . People who will be becoming pensioners between now and 2017 will have the pension age raised from 65 to 67. This will be phased-in in 8 years time and taking 6 years beyond that to complete so that people will have time to adjust to the changes, but us dykes and poofters were given about 8 months - theoretically - to have the changes brought in to provide us ALL with equality.”
Ben Cooper of Community Action Against Homophobia stated: “The day is all about making it clear to the Rudd Labor government that same sex couples will not have achieved legislative equality until we are allowed to Marry. If we can be counted by Centrelink then why can’t we marry?”
The day starting at Town Hall, at 12pm , will be followed by a march to the Sydney Convention Centre, where a mass same-sex wedding ceremony will be held outside the National Labor Conference.

Amnesty International Australia joins fight for same-sex marriage
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL AUSTRALIA - MEDIA RELEASE - July 20, 2009
The Australian section of Amnesty International, the world's largest human rights organization, announced today that it was joining forces with a wide network of national and local groups to fight for the introduction of same-sex marriage in Australia.
The network is organizing rallies across Australia to take place on August 1, the National Day of Action for Same-Sex Marriage.
Zoe Croft, community campaigner with Amnesty International in Melbourne, "Non-discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is an internationally recognized principle, affirmed by the international community for more than a decade. As a cross-cutting principle, it applies to the full range of human rights guaranteed in international standards, including the right of adults to enter into a consensual civil marriage."
"Denial of equal civil recognition of same-sex relationships tends to stigmatise those relationships in ways that can fuel discrimination and other human rights abuses against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Amnesty International has documented some of the most brutal forms that this discrimination can take, including ill-treatment and violence in the community."
Amnesty International members will be joining rallies across Australia on August 1st to urge the federal government to amend the Marriage Act and introduce same-sex marriage.
Amnesty International will also be making a submission in favor of same-sex marriage to Senate Inquiry into Marriage Equality that was launched on 25 June.
"Governments and courts worldwide are increasingly recognizing that sexual orientation discrimination is incompatible with national and international human rights standards. There is now a global trend toward protecting the equal right of same-sex couples to have their relationships recognized in civil law. In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country to offer full civil marriage to same sex couples. Since then, six other countries have followed suit, along with six states of the United States. Amnesty International hopes that Australia will be one of the next."

Ex-Idol star Rob Mills joins fight for same-sex marriage
Equal Love - MEDIA RELEASE - 14 July 2009
MELBOURNE — Former Australian Idol finalist, star of the musical Wicked, and current contestant on Dancing with the Stars, Rob Mills, has joined the fight for same-sex marriage rights in Australia.
“Stand up for your love rights,” Mills urges listeners to Melbourne’s gay and lesbian radio station JOY 94.9 in an ad campaign organised by Equal Love, one of the members of a national coalition of 50 organisations fighting for same-sex marriage.
“I believe in equal love for all, which is why I urge you all to attend the National Day of Action rally on August 1st from 1pm at Federation Square” says Mills.
He also calls on same-sex couples to go along and take part in a world-record attempt at the “largest mass illegal wedding ever”, as part of the August 1 event.
Rob Mills:
“I can’t believe that in Australia in 2009 we still don’t allow same-sex couples to get married. The rest of the world does; it’s high time that we did as well. Allowing same-sex couples to marry has no effect on anyone else. Those couples are happy because they can get married, and it doesn’t take away anything from anyone else. So of course we should allow it. It’s kind of a no-brainer!”
“Rob’s support for marriage equality shows that you don’t have to be gay to support equal rights for same-sex couples,” said Tony Pitman, a spokesperson for Equal Love. “Australia’s same-sex marriage ban is a human rights violation that we should all be concerned about, regardless of sexual orientation. All we’re asking for is equality, pure and simple.”
A Galaxy poll commissioned by Equal Love in June revealed that 60% of Australians now support same-sex marriage, compared with 38% in 2004. Support is strongest among young people, with 74% of respondents aged 16 to 24 agreeing that same-sex couples should have the right to marry.

MOMENTUM BUILDS FOR THIS YEAR’S NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
The National Day of Action for Same-Sex Marriage will take place nationally on Saturday 1st of August. In Sydney the Rally will start at Sydney Town Hall at 12pm and will be followed with a march to Darling Harbour for a Mass “illegal” Same-Sex Wedding.
The day has already been endorsed by more than 60 organisations and an increasing number of couples are registering to “Get Hitched” through the online application form.
Two MP’s will also be speaking out for Same-Sex Marriage on the day. Greens Parliamentarian Lee Rhiannon and City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore will be among the speakers at this year’s National Day of Action for Same-Sex Marriage.
Lee Rhiannon said today in a statement: “There is a glaring omission from the suite of same sex law reform passed by the federal parliament recently. Labor and the Coalition still refuse to support same-sex marriage so Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has introduced into the Senate a private member's bill to end this discrimination. A 30,000-strong petition in support of legalising same-sex marriage has also been presented to the federal parliament. We can’t wait any longer for equality.”
Clover Moore, who has long supported Sydney’s GLBTI population said: "I fully support the GLBT community's campaign for full relationship equality and certainty."
Kate Deverall will speak on behalf of Rainbow Labour NSW and freelance Journalist and editor Katrina Fox will be MC for the day.
Emilia Lawonski, CAAH co-convenor said “ It’s great to have so many prominent community members so involved in the day and we encourage everyone to come along and show your support and cheer on the couples making the day theirs by getting married!”
Ben Cooper, CAAH co-convenor said " We aim to send a clear message to the Rudd government by marching to the National Labor Conference. If we really want our relationships recognised equally we need you to be there to tell Kevin Rudd and the Labor party that nothing less than equal marriage rights will give same sex couples equal rights before the law".

MY BIG FAT GAY WEDDING
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 28, 2009
The Same-Sex Marriage Campaign is calling on Same-Sex couples to participate in the biggest ever “Illegal” Same-Sex Wedding.
A mass Same-Sex wedding demonstration will be held as part of the National Day of Action (NDA) for Same-Sex Marriage in Sydney on Saturday August the 1st.
Pastor Karl Hand from Crave MCC will be officiating over the ceremony and stated that: “The so called progressive governments in America and Australia have been really slow in recognising the equality of queer people. And have stalled on so many of the promises that they have made. It’s time for queer people to stand up and take their future into their own hands.”
Hand also stated his hopes for this years National Day of Action for Same-Sex Marriage “My hope for NDA this year is that we will make it really clear to the Rudd Government that human rights are not optional and that our community will not tolerate them being delayed. It would be amazing if lots of people could come to the NDA this year to help us to make that point.”
Participants on the day will be presented with an official “illegal” Australian Marriage certificate and are invited to write their own vows if they choose to do so.
The Same-Sex Marriage Campaign is fast gaining momentum. “With recent polls showing 6 out of 10 Australians now support Same-Sex marriage and with the introduction of the Federal Same-Sex Marriage bill into parliament last Wednesday now is the best time to stand up and show support for full equality for same-sex couples and create real change” - Emilia Lawonski Community Action Against Homophobia Co-Convenor.
Mass wedding demonstrations will also be held as part of the National Day of Action for Same-Sex Marriage in Melbourne and Canberra.
Willing participants can now register online at: www.caah.org.au/nda or e-mail: caahsydney@gmail.com.
