The Golden Rules

This section relates to NSW law only. Other States and Territories may differ.

* ALWAYS be polite and follow instructions by police, they should tell you why you are being questioned.

* ALWAYS ask for their name and station. They must give you these details when asked. If they do not tell you or refuse, record the identification details of their vehicle if possible.

* DO NOT give police any reason to charge you.

* DO NOT run away from police as this will only provoke them to chase you. The police will approach you anyway, so find a quiet place to sit or calmly walk away. Police will sometimes flush us out of the park in a blitz, so be aware that other police may be waiting around the corner or at the entrances. Remember, you have the right to be in a public place at any time of the day.

* DO NOT run away from council rangers. Council rangers have been known to flush us out of the park. Be aware that police may be waiting around the corner or at the entrances, or may appear as you approach you car. We suggest you find a quiet place to sit or calmly walk away. Remember, you have the right to be in a public place at any time of the day.

* DO NOT get angry or argue with police, even if provoked.

* DO NOT get cocky or be a smartarse to a police officer!

* DO NOT give a police officer or ranger money.

* DO NOT leave your rubbish behind. Always make sure you pick up after yourself and thoughtfully dispose of any rubbish.

* NEVER assault a police officer. Even brushing the officer’s arm away when they try to push you or touch you is considered assault. This may be done after police verbally ask you to move on or physically direct you to move on.

* NEVER swear at a police officer.

* NEVER resist arrest or protest about being arrested.
